In January 1973, the USPS began to issue "Love" stamps for use on Valentine's Day and other special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and letters to loved ones.[48] The first such issue was an 8 cents stamp that the Postal Service initially titled "Special Stamp for Someone Special".[49] The stamp was based on a pop art image that Robert Indiana had designed during the 1960s (see "Love" sculpture).[48][49] The 1973 issue had a printing production of 320 million stamps.
