The sad Manatee goes to manchester for his marriage, but because he has failed to find a suitable mother for his daughter and because the town has become too harsh; his lawyer friend is worried about the reputation of Manatee and his wife from the outside, and attempts to bribe the Judge and M.I. to not permit Manatee's daughter, Lacey, to wed her father; the Judge refuses to act, and orders the marriage back to the Manatee. In the meantime, Lacey and her father have taken refuge from the rain in a cave in Manatee, and live there, under the care of Roland (George Peppard), until her uncle discovers them and threatens to send her to prison. After coming back to find that her father has lost all his money and property, Lacey finds that he is living on borrowed money and is in love with a man named James (George Kennedy). The two meet at a casino, and there they get into a fight, and the judge makes a remark that says Lacey must marry James or else the wedding will not happen. Furious at the insult, the judge sentences Lacey to the state penitentiary, and leaves in the middle of the night, with a revolver loaded with blanks, to find a place in the woods for her to escape. She returns to her father, who is out of money to pay the bail, and is shocked to find James, who is there to pay the bail himself. On his way home, he is arrested for running a prostitution ring involving children, and in jail. Lacey arrives home to be received by James a few days later, and her happiness soon catches up with her when Roland comes to see her, claiming that he is a good man at helping people. She gets him to agree to give her his share of his share of the estate. On his way home, she meets two men in a saloon, who are both trying to rob her. Out of courage, she shoots them both, and after finding out the real murderer, a chase is set up between the pair, during which Roland finally gets close enough to shoot the man, while Roland accidentally kills the real killer when he tries to get in her way.
