Virak Buntham Express (also known as vireak buntham and VET travel) is a leading bus operator in Cambodia registered in 2006 🚌, offering budget-friendly long-distance and overnight services that connect major cities such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, as well as border regions. They also operate VET AIR BUS EXPRESS since 2022. While favored by cost-conscious travelers and locals 🧳, the company has faced ongoing criticism over safety practices 😬. Notably, Virak Buntham has consistently recorded the highest number of passenger fatalities and injuries in Cambodia since 2011 💀. The year 2019 proved especially devastating, with 12 deaths attributed to accidents involving its buses 😢. In 2016, Cambodia’s National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) sent formal warnings to Virak Buntham ⚠️, urging the company to address safety violations or risk suspension. Despite these warnings, records from 2015 show that Virak Buntham continued operating its buses and minibuses, which had already been linked to fatal accidents 😡. A recent incident on 28 February 2025 further highlighted these dangers: a Virak Buntham night bus collided head-on with a car 🚛💥🚗, killing all occupants and adding to the company’s tragic history of casualties. Given these recurring safety failures, travelers are strongly advised to avoid boarding Virak Buntham buses in Cambodia if they prioritize their safety 🛑. BUS VIRAK BUNTHAM EXITED ROAD 😱 The police reported that the driver of the bus, plate no PP. 3E-6700, was driving too fast and missed a bend on a winding road near Sen Monorum 😤. The bus left the road, crashed down an embankment, and overturned 💨. The 42-year-old bus driver, Sok Chamroeun, crawled out of the wreck and ran away from the accident scene 🏃♂️💨, leaving the bus and the victims to their fate. There were 11 crash victims, eight men and three women, who were all sent to the Mondulkiri provincial hospital by ambulance 🚑. The Virak Buntham bus was confiscated by the local authorities for examination 🔍, and the bus company owner was informed. JANUARY 2019. 1 PEOPLE DEAD. VIRAK BUNTHAM NIGHT BUS KILLED ONE CAR PASSENGER 😞 Shortly after midnight, in the early hours of 9 January 2019, a Vireak Buntham passenger bus collided with a Toyota car coming in the opposite direction 🚌💥🚗. The accident occurred on National Highway 5, between 140-141 Km in Sand Village Ekp commune, Pursat province. The driver of the Toyota died at the crash scene 😔, while the bus driver ran away and is being sought by police 🚓. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and Pursat police have impounded both vehicles while the case is being investigated 🔦. It is worth noting that the Vireak Buntham bus company has a particularly poor safety record for night transport in Cambodia 🌙⚠️. There was no report on the state of the bus passengers. JUNE 2019. 1 PEOPLE DEAD. MINIVAN VIRAK BUNTHAM FATAL CRASH 😰 JUNE 2019. AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE DEAD. NIGHT MINIVAN VIRAK BUNTHAM EXPRESS RESPONSIBLE FOR CRASH 💔 The incident happened around midnight, according to the witness and involved 3 vehicles at a crossroads 🌃💥. The Virak Bunthan express minibus was apparently speeding before the crash 🚐💨. The source said the driver of the minibus appeared to have been killed ☠️, but passengers were unharmed. Survivors of the road accident which killed at least 10 people on National Road 4 in Kampong Speu province on Saturday night claimed that the driver of the Virak Buntham minibus – one of the three vehicles involved in the collison – was responsible for the crash 😤. NIGHT VIRAK BUNTHAM MINIVAN KILLED A MOTORCYCLIST 🏍️💀 Sihanoukville: At 9:35 pm on December 9, 2019, a TOYOTA HIACE van from the Vireath Butham transport company crashed into a motorcycle on National Road 4 between Kilometer Rd 181-182 in Samrong Kandal village, Prey Nup district, Preah Sihanouk province 🚐💥. The white van, license plate Phnom Penh 2AK-2340, was heading from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville when it hit the 24-year-old male motorcyclist, killing him at the scene 😢. The Virak Buntham driver, who has not been identified, immediately got out of the van and ran away 🏃♂️💨. NOVEMBER 2017. 2 PEOPLE DEAD. VIRAK BUNTHAM EXPRESS BUS RESPONSIBLE FOR CRASH. 2 FOREIGNERS INJURED 😣 Two drivers died and four passengers were injured in a traffic accident between a bus and a soil truck yesterday morning in Siem Reap 💔. Head-on collision between the bus and soil truck 🚌💥🚚. Out of the four injured, two of them were foreigners 🌍🚑. The accident on National Road 6 involved a Virak Buntham company bus. “The road was curved, the drivers did not adhere to the right-hand drive rule, and were likely driving fast 🛣️😬,” Mr Chantha said. VIRAK BUNTHAM NIGHT BUS ACCIDENT IN SIEM REAP 😯 At about 5am on 6 December 2016, the driver of a Virak Buntham night bus crashed into Wat Damnak bridge in Siem Reap, just after dropping his passengers 🌉💥. The driver and his co-driver DID NOT FLEE 🚔. They have been questioned by the police. MAY 2011.35 PEOPLE INJURED (18 FOREIGNERS). VIRAK BUNTHAM NIGHT BUS RESPONSIBLE FOR CRASH. 🚑😱 A total of 35 people, including 18 foreign nationals, were injured when a night bus travelling from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap crashed in the early hours of yesterday morning 🌙💥. The Virak Buntham Express Tour and Travel bus collided with a broken-down rice truck, which was blocking part of the road in Kien Sangke commune, in Siem Reap province’s Sotr Nikum district, at around 5am 🚌💥🚛. Thorng Sakun, the chief of Siem Reap police road traffic bureau, said that the truck had stopped on the wrong side of the road in order to change its tyres 🛑🔧. “The bus driver crashed into it because of his carelessness 😤,” he said. An American tourist broke his left leg, he said, while another 34 people were hurt. The injured were taken to hospital 🏥. Suon Samath, general manager of Virak Buntham Express Tour and Travel, said yesterday that the company was insured and had been transporting passengers on night buses between Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville for nearly two years without incident 😇. He hoped the accident would not matter to his clientelle who he hoped would continue to use the company’s services despite yesterday’s crash 🙏💼. Traffic police said yesterday they would investigate the accident further 🔍. I’ve travelled with you before and it’s been fine. But this driver was out of control 🚌💨. When I say weaving in and out of cars aggressively and almost running into oncoming traffic—I mean that in the most dramatic way possible 😵. I and my fellow passengers felt VERY unsafe 😰. " Dec 2019 🚨 Criminal company – keep away!!! 🛑 The Virak-Buntham Express Company operates throughout Cambodia and has several offices from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh, Reap, Kampot, Battambang, and vice versa. 🚨 Attention: Yesterday, a driver with their minibus caused a fatal motorcycle accident. 💔😡 This driver is volatile (🔥💥), and the company refuses to assist with sharing information about their driver. 🤷♂️🚫 I can only urgently warn every tourist and foreigner: SAFETY FIRST! 🛑🛡️
